Madtown Model

Being an independent thinker should have its privileges in America, but usually our McDemocracy gets us all BOXed in at the check-off counter.

That might be changing.

Wisconsin is one of the few states that allows registered Independents like me to vote for whomever they choose, regardless of fingerprint color or affiliation.

So it makes sense that Obama made a stump speech last night at UW's Kohl Center that hit the spot in many ways. I'm not formally backing, or shall I say baracking, Obama the nominee just yet. But it's getting incredibly fucking close.

The critical aspect of Obama's speech was his initial bullet points outlining the differences between "hope" and utopia. He also could be the first candidate since the See-Span 90s to use the words "art" and "music" and "literature" and "culture" in the same speech. It's also refreshing to see whats gotta be the first candidate this decade to actually write his own speeches. (Although he should drop that exaggerated preacherman-from-the-South accent. C'mon keep it real, B!)

Madison is like some of the other awesome mid-size midwestern towns in "flyover" country that should be heaped with more praise and more attention. Progressive, high IQ, arsty-not-fartsy, and cool as a cucumber; not cheesy at all. David Grohl agrees with me, too.

The locale is a budding hotbed for production. Even UW alumnus Michael Mann recently put out a casting call for his next flick featuring Johnny Depp, shooting in Chicago and Madison. The last studio film shot in Madtown was The Last Kiss.

If there wasn't Madison there would also be no Butch Vig. No Garbage, no Siamese Dream, no Nevermind, no Against Me.

Oh, and a little publication named The Onion was started in Madison, which later lead to an office opening in Manhattan which later lead to a nice little jew-boy named Ben Karlin sliding into a TV producer's chair on a little show named "the Daily Show." Speaking of which, welcome back kotters!
